Fluoride Varnish Information for Parents

What is fluoride varnish?
Fluoride varnish is much like the topical fluoride applications which have been used in the dental offices for many years. The paint on fluoride varnish is sticky, so it attaches to the teeth easily, lasts longer, and is quick to apply. Only a few drops need to be used to coat all of the teeth. The fluoride makes the outer layer (enamel) of the teeth harder and more resistant to decay.

Why is the medical office doing a fluoride treatment?

This medical office feels it is very important to provide the treatment as a service which will help prevent tooth decay. It is also an opportunity for the medical staff to tell parents how important dental health is and refer you to a dentist if one is needed. Often we forget that oral health is part of total body health.

If my child gets a fluoride varnish treatment at the medical office is it still necessary to have one at the dental office?

Yes. A medical coupon will pay for 3 fluoride treatments a year at both the medical and dental office. Remember, it is still important to visit your dentist for regular check-ups. This will mean stronger and healthier teeth.

If my child gets a fluoride varnish treatment, do I still have to give my child fluoride drops or chewable fluoride tablets?
Yes. The fluoride varnish works from the outside of the tooth inward-it makes the enamel stronger. Fluoride drops or fluoride tablets work from the inside of the tooth outward before the teeth come in. Remember, if your child chews a fluoride tablet, have them swish the fluoride around their teeth as well. This will give the teeth a fluoride rinse and also help to make the outer layer of the teeth stronger.

Why do my child’s teeth look darker after a Fluoride Varnish?
The fluoride varnish has a resin base that makes it sticky. This resin is a darker color and will last longer than other fluorides. Leave the fluoride varnish on overnight and do not brush it off right away. It will come off with eating and brushing.
