The most important parent/caregiver responsibility is to take the child to the dentist. Parents/caregivers may pick a dentist from the list provided at the time of enrollment and should make their child an appointment as soon as possible. Dentists are listed by city or zip code to make it easier to find one located in your area. Parents/caregivers should be sure to let the dental office know their child is on the ABCD Program at the time they are making the appointment.

For the child's first dental visit (and every appointment thereafter) the parent must bring the ABCD identification/enrollment card and a current medical assistance coupon. The parent/caregiver's most important job is to be a responsible client. A list of Dental Do's is provided. Parents/caregivers are encouraged to read them carefully as they provide information concerning expectations as a dental patient.

The most important "DO" is to keep appointments. If an appointment must be cancelled, parents/caregivers should give the dentist office at least 24 hours advance notice, or the dental office will consider the appointment a "No Show". In most offices , the policy is two "No Shows," and children will no longer be seen as a client in that office. Policies may differ from office to office.

Dental offices report "No Shows" to the administrator/coordinator and this is recorded in the ABCD database. The ABCD Program may suspend program benefits after two recorded "No Shows".

Parents/caregivers are instructed to bring only the child who has the dental appointment to the dental office and make child care arrangements for other children. Many of the ABCD dentists have small waiting room areas which will not accommodate many children.

Cleanliness of the mouth and body is also important when taking children to the dental office.
